Trailer Tuesdays: June 18, 2013

Trailers are usually the first step in getting an audience’s attention and building the momentum for many films - Far and away more profoundly and proficiently, trailers can help explain a film and package a film even better than word-of-mouth.

Fresh Roasted Films searching weekly for the best trailers that have been released in the past week to bring you, our dear readers the best of what’s to come on the horizon of Film, and unlike the blog that is devoted more to Independent fare, we don’t discriminate here at Trailer Tuesdays - we screen all and show all: Foreign, Domestic, Indie or Major Release - all are welcome. (As a side note, if you have a trailer you would like to be up for consideration, feel free to send it to Freshroastedfilms@gmail.com).

With that…..

Welcome to Trailer Tuesdays!

=== The To Do List ===

Even if you aren’t in love with “Parks and Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza — and by this point, who isn’t? — the red-band trailer for her new movie “The To-Do List” features so many familiar faces, you’re bound to come across someone — likely a TV star — you love.

First, you’ll notice Alia Shawkat, best known for playing Maeby Funke on “Arrested Development.” Here, she’s one of Plaza’s best friends (the other is Sarah Steele who you probably know from watching “Spanglish” too many times on TBS), there to console her after being laughed off the stage by Christopher Mintz-Plasse during her valedictorian speech. Maeby is on a mission to get her uptight BFF some boys, and Plaza reluctantly sets her sights on a long-haired Scott Porter (“Friday Night Lights,” “Hart of Dixie”). Afraid he won’t be interested due to her sexual inexperience — a ridiculous idea considering the one-track minds of high school boys — Plaza turns to her older sister for advice. In perhaps the most brilliant bit of casting, Rachel Bilson handles the role exactly as I imagine her “O.C.” character Summer Roberts would had she had a younger sister: with hard-hitting advice involving the word “penis.”

Also dropping in for the extended trailer are Clark Gregg (“Much Ado About Nothing,” “The Avengers”) and Connie Britton (Mrs. Coach, “Nashville”) as Plaza’s parents, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, and Donald Glover (“Community,” Childish Gambino). It’s quite the who’s who of fan favorite, B-list actors, and nothing would make us happier than if “The To Do List” turns out to be the 2013 version of “Easy A” or “Superbad,” given its R-rated premise. The Black List script —originally titled “The Hand Job” — comes from first-time feature writer and director Maggie Carey, an improv veteran at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. Still, the plot feels a little generic for such a likable bunch. Do we really need another movie about a high schooler trying to lose his or her virginity before college?

The To Do List hits theaters on July 26

=== Last I Heard ===

Acting veteran Paul Sorvino takes center stage in the indie drama Last I Heard. In the film, Sorvino plays Joseph “Mr. Joe” Scoleri, an ex Mafia member struggling to adjust with life in Queens, NY after serving over twenty years in prison. Chazz Palminteri, Michael Rapaport and Renee Props all co-star.

=== A Most Wanted Man ===

Anton Corbijn‘s two feature films have been pretty firmly aimed at the arthouse, but with his John le Carré adaptation A Most Wanted Man, the director may find himself with a slightly larger audience. Philip Seymour Hoffman stars in a story about a ”young ex-prisoner who arrives illegally in Germany, practically destitute.” Hoffman’s character harbors significant suspicions — or paranoia — about the young man’s backing and intentions, and sets out to find out what he’s really all about. Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Daniel Bruhl and Robin Wrightco-star in the film which, from this footage, appears to make a nice companion to the other recent le Carré adaptation Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. There are differences, obviously, but this film appears cold and soaked in fear, and like it gets the tone right. It looks good on this cast, too, and I’m excited to see what Corbijn has really achieved here.

=== Orange is the New Black (TV Series) ====

Netflix only unleashed the fourth season of Arrested Development late last month, but in keeping with its ambition to one day rival HBO, the company is already hyping its next Originals project. The first trailer for Orange is the New Black has been released before it’s approaching July 11th debut.

Suffice it to say, the Bluth family this is not. Rather, Orange is the New Black is unlike anything we’ve yet seen from Netflix, based on Piper Kerman’s memoir documenting a year she spent in women’s prison. The lead trailer for Netflix’s comedy-drama is very much NSFW, but offers a strong preview of what to expect from the 13-episode season. Orange is the New Black is being led by Jenji Kohan (who also created Showtime hit Weeds) and stars Taylor Schilling and Jason Biggs among its cast.

=== Getaway ===

There’s actually a minor explosion of genre movies featuring Hawke lately.  In addition to two horror pictures there’s Getaway, which co-stars Selena Gomez, and also a car. This isn’t The Getaway, which would be the story by Jim Thompson that has already been adapted twice, and influenced From Dusk Till Dawn. This is a different straight-up race movie, pared down to the bare essentials. The trailer is below, and it builds to a nice pitch.

=== We Steal Secrets: The Study of Wikileaks (2013 Sundance Premiere) ===

So…here’s all you need to know….the group that was responsible for releasing a crap ton of government docs and materials out onto the cybernet…well, someone made a documentary about them.

It’s intriguing and well….just see it.

The first annual Chicago Women’s Funny Festival took place in 2012 at Stage 773. Producers Jill Valentine and Liz McArthur wanted to build a comedy festival where women could come together and celebrate all art forms of comedy under one roof.  The response from comedians and audience members was overwhelmingly positive – which is why the festival is coming back.  The 2013 festival is bigger – putting all four of Stage 773’s theaters to use each night of the festival.

Additional programming will also take place during the festival and includes “Matt Likes Girls” a live comedy podcast taping featuring Chicago based comedian Matt Riggs Thursday, June 6 at 11 p.m.  Riggs’ weekly podcast features his favorite thing in the world – girls.  Be it actress, musician, comedian or his own mother, Matt has in depth conversations about the lives of successful women and what they are all about.  Tickets to “Matt Likes Girls” are free to the public.

Valentine has been the executive director of the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival since the festival’s inception in 2000. McArthur can be seen with groups such as Off Off Broadzway, OneTwoThree Comedy, and Feminine Gentlemen. McArthur is also the founder of SMUSH aMonday night open mic room at Stage773 and also a part of the hit zombie comedy Musical of the Living Dead.

Check Out the Kings of Summer Interactive Posters

Audiences love a good coming of age story, and Jordan Vogt-Roberts‘ film The Kings of Summer is a great one. It tells the story of three boys (Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Aries) who decide to run away from home and build their own house in the woods. The Sundance hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles this past weekend and will expand from there.

Our full review will be posted later this week but for now several posters have spun the tone of the film into cool, variant images.

Here are two posters, one by Rich Kelly (revaled by Vogt-Roberts) and another by Adam Schickling (revealed by AICN). The director promises more in the future.

Then, ThingLink did this cool interactive piece that doubles as a poster.

There’s no word if any of these will actually be printed, but we’ll keep an eye on it if they do.

Are you going to catch Kings of Summer this weekend?

Fresh Roasted Meet Up: /Film talks with Nick Offerman about Kings of Summer

There’s There’s a lot to like in the coming of age comedy The Kings of Summer, which opens on May 31. The Stand By Me meets Superbad story of three boys who run away from home to make their own house in the woods creates an entertaining and relatable microcosm of teenage life thanks to the script by Chris Galletta. Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Aries each do wonderful work as the three main characters and Jordan Vogt-Roberts‘ direction brings it all together with a timeless, exciting tone.

But the true highlights are the supporting performances by some of TV’s most recognizable faces. Paramount among those is Nick Offerman. Best known for his role on Parks and Recreation, the actor steals every scene as the man most responsible for the boys running away from home. His performance is heartbreaking, laugh out loud hilarious and totally unforgettable. So while Megan Mullally, Alison Brie and Mary Lynn Rajskub all excel in their small roles, Offerman is the stand out.

We were lucky enough to speak to Offerman about The Kings of Summer and he told us about his love affair with smaller films, how the Internet is hurting comedy, and a bit about The Lego Movie. Read it below.

/Film: Hello Nick, how are you?

Nick Offerman: I’m good. How are you doing?

Good, good. So I really enjoyed the movie. How did you first hear about this project? It seems like a smaller movie and you’re a pretty in demand actor.

Well, this side of film has been sort of my bread and butter since I got to Los Angeles really. It was even a film of this size that brought me to LA. Back in 1995 I did a movie called Going All The Way with some young up and comers like Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz, Jeremy Davies, and Rose McGowan. So this film in particular, the director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts is at UTA and we share an agent there named Jake Asner and so they were getting ready to cast the film. Jake, bless his heart, thought I was perfect for this part with my combination of intimidating glares and giggly sense of humor. He sent it over to me and I just fell in love with it. This size of film is really my favorite thing to work on. I come from Chicago theater where I had a little company called The Defiant Theater and little indie movies really remind me of that upbringing that I had in Chicago theater where you can see everybody making the art together the whole time and that’s something I find really charming and attractive.

Did you explain that to some of your younger costars, like Nick Robinson? Your chemistry in this is really good and it’s one of his first starring roles.

Yeah. I don’t know that these kids needed me to explain much of anything to them. They are more mature at eighteen than I probably will be at forty-eight. I’m forty-two now. I was just astonished with their talent and their poise as well as their ability to roll with it. We had a lot of incredibly funny comedy performers in the movie. Down to like every one liner, Jordan brought in the most incredible comedians from LA and these youngsters just rolled with everybody’s incredibly facile punches, you know? We all did our fare share of cracking up, because the material ended up being so funny, but they were amazing. They also had an impressive amount of gas. I applaud that in any performer, the ability to rip one in the middle of a scene.

(Laughs) Because Nick is your son in the movie, did you spend some time with him before hand? Or did it just develop on set or in rehearsals?

We didn’t have a lot of time. I was sort of shoehorned in so we spent some time together right when I got to town. We did a little bit of rehearsing with the director and Nick Robinson just has his shit together. It didn’t take long. I mean the kid’s a pro and so we read the scenes a couple of times and looked each other in the eye and he grinned at me sheepishly and I said “All right, turn that camera on.” (Laughs)

And your character, Frank, is great at these sarcastic put downs, but he’s also got a lot of personal issues and you really toe that line very well in the movie. Was the character that complex on the page?

It was probably much more complex. I’m known for my clumsy destruction of writing more than my complexities. I don’t know. I was really attracted to the emotional story of this guy who… He and his son are damaged in the same way. They lost their wife and mother and they are guys. They are going through a son’s coming of age at the very time that they lose the matriarch of their household and all they have to do is say “Hey, we are both in pain. Let’s have a hug. I love you.” But it just takes them the length of the movie to come around to that understanding.

There are a lot of complex and nice scenes in the movie, but my two favorite scenes are your scenes at the door talking to the Chinese delivery guy and the cops. Are those improvs? They seem like they were just right in your wheelhouse.

They are pretty rife with improv, yes. Chris Galletta wrote a beautiful and hilarious script. I was so happy to meet him and shake his hand, because he pours his heart and soul into his scripts and he takes a long time to get them right and that was what really attracted me to this film, his magnificent script. And so the spirit of both of those scenes is his, the annoying rookie cop at the door with the long suffering sergeant and just this righteously indignant dad and then the wonton scene. The spine of that scene is his. It’s the dad, frustrated at what’s going on in the living room and takes it out on the guy over the size of the wontons. That’s the script. Those performers, Thomas Middledich is the rookie cop and Mary Lynn Rajskub as his superior and then Kumail Nanjani as the delivery person.

I mean bringing them from Los Angeles to play these smaller roles was what I think takes the movie into the stratosphere, because those little scenes, which are usually throw aways in a low budget indie, you cast some local stoner as the delivery guy, but Jordan the director brought in top notch talent and so every one of those scenes to me… It’s some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen out of people in a long time. So yeah, we took the spine of what Chris wrote and added some frosting.

These days comedians and comedic actors get a lot of shit for potentially offensive jokes. Do you feel like America is becoming overly sensitive towards comedy?

Well, you know, the Internet is a wonderful tool with a lot of great advantages, but it also has a lot of terrible virus-like attributes and one of them is that we can all say whatever we want to everybody all of the time. Comedy, you used to have to seek it out. If you wanted to hear Bill Hicks go off brilliantly or George Carlin, you had to find it. You knew if you were tuning in to one of those guys somewhat what you were in store for. You didn’t just happen upon it where a self-righteous conservative would say “What? Is this a joke you made about killing sheep?” Then suddenly it’s plastered across the headlines on Huffington Post.

I mean love it or hate it, that whole Justin Bieber Anne Frank thing is like “God, what a sad place the world has come to that some crack a kid made in a guestbook in a Museum in Amsterdam is international news capturing headlines?” So yeah, I continue to remind myself not to give a shit about what people say because I’m doing the job I’m doing, because people find me entertaining some of the time and so I’m just going to continue doing that.

I try not to look at anybody’s opinion about much of anything, because I don’t have the time. I think it’s a waste of time. If people are going to keep saying “Hey we are going to keep hiring you to interpret scripts for photographed entertainment,” then I’ll say “Then I don’t give a shit what a reviewer says or certainly some blog.” I mean that seems to me like somebody who thirty years ago would have been lonely and sad, now they have a place where they can rant about something. It used to be to their cats, now it’s to the seventeen people reading their blog.

I wish we could talk more about that but I ’ve got to wrap up. Last quick thing, what can you tell me about your role as the voice in the LEGO movie? I think that’s going to be so awesome from the guys that did 21 Jump Street.

You know, I’m crazy about those guys, Chris Miller and Phil Lord. Even before 21 Jump Street they made Cloudy With A Change of Meatballs and I’m so grateful to them, because we had so much fun on 21 Jump Street. I was only there for the very first day of production and we had so much fun just sitting there playing grab ass with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. I’m so tickled for them that that movie was such a hit and it was well deserved.

They came up with this part for me in the LEGO movie and they sent me this script and it’s a kid’s movie. It’s a movie created by a toy company to market to kids and I was so moved by their script and their idea and the themes of the movie. They are very creative and the theme is very much about maintaining one’s individuality and creativity in the face of a world that might have too many rules. I’m so grateful and moved that they wanted to keep working with me, because I’m just really big fans of theirs. I think they are going to bring us a lot of really quality entertainment in the years to come.

The Kings of Summer opens May 31.

Trailer Tuesdays: June 4, 2013

With that…..

Welcome to Trailer Tuesdays!

=== A Field in England ===

A trailer for Kill List director Ben Wheatley’s latest film, A Field in England, has arrived offering the first footage we have ever seen since the project was announced.

Billed as “a psychedelic trip into magic and madness,” A Field in England follows a group of English Civil War soldiers in the 17th century who are captured by an alchemist and led into a vast mushroom field, where they fall victim to violent and nightmarish forces.

A theatrical and VOD release is planned for 2013. Drafthouse Films will distribute.

==== This Is Martin Bonner (2013 Sundance Film Fest Next Winner)====

Chad Hartigan‘s Sundance entry, This Is Martin Bonner, quietly snuck up on audiences this past January, with the character-driven tale eventually picking up the Audience Award for the Best of NEXT section. Starring Paul Eenhoorn as the eponymous character, the film centers on Martin’s late-in-life transition from a full (but complicated) life on the East coast to a quiet and unassuming one in Reno. Bankrupt, Martin takes on his first job in two years – a volunteer gig that sees him helping newly released inmates transition back into normal life. In the course of his work, Martin makes an unexpected new friend in former prisoner Travis (Richmond Arquette), a relationship that is soon put to the test.

This Is Martin Bonner opens in limited release on June 28th, thanks to Monterey Media.

=== Maniac ====

Though there have been multiple trailers released for Franck Khalfoun‘s remake of Maniac, and we’ve even seen the first few minutes of the movie, this marks the first time the official US release gets some love.

On June 21 IFC Midnight will release the film, which stars Elijah Wood as a deranged killer whose point of view makes up most of the movie. They’ve now released a trailer and brand new poster. Check them out below.

==== The Act of Killing ===

I know no one who has emerged unscathed from The Act of Killing. The film might be one of the strangest ever made, as it forces men to confront their actions by recreating them in movie form. But these aren’t just any men — they’re guys like Anwar Congo who, as death squad leaders during the “Thirtieth of September Movement,” staged a coup d’etat in Indonesia in 1965, and then committed genocide through an anti-Communist purge.

Estimates of the death toll vary widely, from 80,000 to one million. By any standard, these are heinous crimes. ”War crimes are declared by the winners,” Anwar Congo says, before happily proclaiming “I’m the winner!”

Today Anwar and other death squad leaders have not been tried as criminals; rather, they hold positions of some social standing. The Act of Killing features their full cooperation. It invites the death squad leaders to recreate their actions as genre movies — westerns, musicals, and so on — and in so doing bring their past back to life. The trailer below shows you some of the effect, and even in this abbreviated form it is deeply chilling.

The Act of Killing hits limited theaters on July 19.

In this chilling and inventive documentary, executive produced by Errol Morris (The Fog Of War) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), the filmmakers examine a country where death squad leaders are celebrated as heroes, challenging them to reenact their real-life mass killings in the style of the American movies they love. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Shaking audiences at the 2012 Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, The Act of Killingis an unprecedented film and, according to the Los Angeles Times, “could well change how you view the documentary form.”

=== This is the End ===

Here’s the red-band TV spot:

This Is The End is out June 12.

When Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen head to James Franco‘s house for a party, they’re not surprised to see the likes of Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Michael Cera, Aziz Ansari, Kevin Hart, Jason Segel, Paul Rudd, Rihanna and Emma Watson.What they are surprised about is when the apocalypse starts right outside their door and many of those friends meet their untimely deaths. That leaves six of the friends (Franco, Rogen, Hill, McBride, Robinson, Baruchel) in survival mode.

Fresh Roasted Meet Up: Brit Marling & Ellen Page get Interviewed about 'The East'

Brit Marling and Ellen PageDAVE ALLOCCA, STARPIX

Two years after “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice” catapulted her to indie-icon status at Sundance, Brit Marling was back in Park City this January with her latest writing-acting effort, “The East.” Directed and co-written by her “Sound of My Voice” collaborator Zal Batmanglij, the Fox Searchlight thriller centers on an ex-FBI agent (Marling) who infiltrates an anarchist collective known as The East suspected of attacking corporate CEOs. Once embedded within the group, however, she soon finds herself on their side.

Fresh PSA: Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy tell you not to use your Cell Phone

Don’t you just hate it when someone checks their phone during a movie, or worse, answers a call? Well, so does Julie Delpy.

In a hilarious new PSA courtesy of the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain, “Before Midnight” stars Delpy and Ethan Hawke get creative in their plea to tell you to turn your phone off before a movie. In the midst of what appears to be a scene from the third film in the “Before Sunrise” series, the two gab on as their characters do, before Delpy just can’t take it anymore and breaks the fourth wall to cuss out (in French, no less) someone on the phone. Funny stuff.

The Drafthouse is big on their no-texting rule.  They made a hilarious PSA after an irate customer called them after getting kicked out and have enlisted stars like James Franco before the “Before Midnight” duo to explain why texting at the movies is so annoying.

“Before Midnight” is now in theaters. Watch the PSA below:

Fresh Roasted Reviews: Shadow Dancer

IndieWire: This Year’s James Bond is James Marsh’s ‘Shadow Dancer’

Generally speaking, this is an off-year for James Bond. Recent reports suggest that Sam Mendes, widely acclaimed for rejuvenating the franchise with last year’s “Skyfall,” will return for another installment sometime next year, which means the next Bond movie will hit theaters…well, later. But if it’s smart, elegant British espionage tales you crave, the fix arrives much sooner than that, with the release of James Marsh’s “Shadow Dancer” in theaters this week.
